What is Music Together®?

At Music Together Fireflies, we are proud to offer the early childhood music program Music Together®. Since 1987, Music Together has introduced millions of children, parents, and teachers around the world to the powerful benefits of having music in their lives.

From babyhood through the early elementary years, Music Together nurtures each child’s natural musicality in a playful, musically rich learning environment. Our research-based music classes are designed to be non-formal and non-performance oriented, so your child can learn at his or her own pace, in a way that’s developmentally appropriate.

When you participate in our program, you’re guaranteed to learn new songs and music activities to inspire you to bring music into your family’s everyday life.

We Teach the Way Children Learn

At Music Together, we know that children learn differently than adults. They learn instinctively and constantly, and teach themselves through imitation and play, through being immersed in their environment, and through interaction with adults and older children. The family-like setting of Music Together classes creates an ideal learning environment. And it’s all based on research in early childhood and music development.

Your Role Is Essential

You are your child’s most important music teacher right now! Young children learn through play and experimentation and by watching and listening to the grownups they love. Setting an example as an enthusiastic participator in music activities is the best thing any parent or caregiver can do to help set a child on the road to a lifelong love of music. Parents don't need to have music skills—they just need a desire to play and have fun with their children! Our teachers are specially trained to create a safe atmosphere so you can happily join in, experiment, or even get silly—and feel closer to your child while doing so.

Music Learning Supports All Learning®

Wiggling, singing, and laughing with your child is so much fun, it's easy to forget how much learning is taking place! Our research-based curriculum not only develops music skills, it nurtures creativity, self-expression, and confidence while also supporting social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

The Music Together® Philosophy

Most people think being musical is a question of talent—you either have it or you don't. While that may sound reasonable, it's completely untrue! All children can learn to dance and sing just as naturally as they learn to walk and talk. With this in mind, we formulated four basic principles that guide everything we do:

All children are born musical.
All children can achieve basic music competence—that is, they can learn to sing in tune and dance accurately to a beat.
It's crucial that parents and caregivers participate in class and model music-making for their children in class and at home, regardless of their own musical ability.
The environment that best fosters young children's musical growth is playful, musically rich, and developmentally appropriate.

What are classes like?

Each week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes at Music Together Fireflies, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and the grownups who love them gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments, of course!). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place!

You’ll take home the award-winning music used in class, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long, you’ll be supporting your child’s music-learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer.

Why mixed ages?

Child development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural, family-style learning, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this class, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize, listen, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together!

Our Music

Music Together Fireflies is proud to teach the Music Together curriculum, which includes an award-winning mix of original songs and traditional tunes from a range of musical styles, including folk, blues, jazz, and world music. The music is pitched just right for children's voices, and the arrangements are fun, sophisticated, and loved by children—and grownups! The combination gives children a rich music experience, and makes this kids’ music enjoyable for adult listening, too!
