Frequently Asked Questions

Each class typically has between 6 and 12 registered children, plus their caregiver(s).

Yes! Any adults who are part of your child’s life may accompany them and participate in class. It does not have to be the same adult(s) every time. In fact, we encourage extended family members or other important adults in your child’s life to attend class when they can. If there will be more than two adults attending class with your child, please just check with your teacher ahead of time to make sure there is space.

At Music Together®, we know that children respond in different ways, and some may be stimulated by the music and want to move, jump, and dance. This movement is an important part of learning! Your teacher will lead a variety of different movement activities, including some large movement around the room and some small movement while seated. Children are never required to sit in the circle or expected to conform to an adult’s idea of participation. As long as everyone is safe, your child is free to move around the room throughout class.
-
We know that all children learn and respond differently, and some learn best by observing. Many children will simply want to watch and absorb, particularly in the first few weeks of class. Some may quietly observe during class but actively engage with the music at home. We understand this, and in class children are never required to participate in a certain way or to do exactly what the teacher is doing. We know that learning will occur naturally when children are immersed in a community of families all making music.

Children with special needs are welcome in any of our classes. With our “accept-and-include” philosophy, understanding of developmentally appropriate practice, and our respect for different learning styles, children with special needs often thrive in our music classes. While Music Together® classes are not therapeutic intervention, the inclusive family music-making experience may complement your child’s therapies, while providing an activity your whole family can enjoy together. Please feel free to reach out to us to discuss your child’s specific needs.

Sing, dance, and have fun! You might be surprised to hear that you are your child’s most important music teacher right now—and it doesn’t matter whether you think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. Young children develop dispositions for certain behaviors, including learning to love music, by observing and imitating their loved ones. Simply by participating enthusiastically during class and playing with the ideas at home, you’ll give your children the modeling they need to learn to love to make music. In class, we promote a relaxed and supportive environment, so you can feel safe to be yourself, be silly, and simply focus on making music and connecting with your child.

Children anywhere from newborn to age 5 are welcome in our classes, and there is no one “right” time to start. There are benefits at every age, and it is never too early or too late to begin. Babies are natural-born music-makers, alert to musical sounds and naturally responsive to melody and rhythm from birth. In our classes, you’ll learn musical ways to interact and bond with your baby, support their brain development, and nurture their inner musician. Toddlers are ready to move and explore, and have ample opportunity to do so in our classes, as they soak in all that music learning. And since Music Learning Supports All Learning®, they will also be developing their language, cognitive, and social-emotional skills. Preschoolers continue to benefit from this skill enhancement, and often become leaders in class, as they’re encouraged to share their ideas and express their creativity.
